The Police fue una de la bandas más importantes del rock de los años 80; cuyo estilo musical estuvo marcado por influencias del rock, reggae y jazz. Se formó en 1977 y tocaron oficialmente hasta marzo de 1984 (nunca emitieron un comunicado sobre su disolución). Estaba formada por Sting, voz y bajo; Andy Summers, guitarra y coros y Stewart Copeland, batería y coros.

«Ghost in the Machine» (en castellano «Fantasma en la máquina») es el cuarto álbum de The Police. El disco, editado en 1981, está claramente influenciado por la situación socio-política mundial en sus letras y es el más oscuro de los cinco editados en estudio por el trío británico.
