The Cure es una banda de rock británica formada en 1976 en Crawley, Sussex Occidental, Inglaterra. Es muy difícil categorizar a The Cure en un sólo estilo musical tomando en cuenta el sonido de la banda a lo largo de su dilatada carrera, ya que en algunos trabajos se puede escuchar un sonido claramente gótico o dark wave sentimental depresivo (Love song o One Houndred Years), mientras que en otros temas se puede encontrar música new wave alegre u optimista (Mint car o In between days), sonidos post-punk (Boys don t cry y Killing an Arab) y hasta ciertos toques de electrónica («Wrong number»).

Entre el año de su formación, 1976, y 2004, The Cure había logrado vender alrededor de 31 millones de discos en todo el mundo. Hasta 2008, The Cure ha editado 13 álbumes de estudio, treinta y cuatro singles y numerosos recopilatorios y reediciones.

En 1986, coincidiendo con el décimo aniversario de la formación de la banda, se publica Standing on a Beach: the Singles 1978-1986, también titulado «Staring at the Sea» en su versión CD en algunos países. En este recopilatorio se recogen todos los Singles de la banda entre 1978 y 1986.
