The Smashing Pumpkins es un grupo musical estadounidense de rock alternativo formado en Chicago en 1988. Con influencias del rock progresivo, gótico, heavy metal, la sicodelia y el pop, crean un sonido profundo y poderoso encabezado por guitarras distorsionadas.

El 24 de octubre de 1995 -por medio de la discográfica Virgin Records- fue lanzado su tercer disco, «Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness», un álbum doble de 28 canciones que debutó en el primer lugar del ranking Billboard de octubre de 1995, logrando vender dieciséis millones de copias en el mundo y conseguir nueve discos de platino.
La revista Time catalogó el trabajo como «el más ambicioso por parte de los Smashing Pumpkins», además de nombrarlo «Mejor álbum de 1995».
